Classics U.K. field trips
- a Celtic hillfort and Cirencester museum


The girls of Year 8 climbed British Camp - one of the Malvern Hills - to find out how the Britons fortified hillforts before the Roman invasion of 43 AD. You can see the tiers of fortifications here (this picture was taken from a nearby hill) and the girls followed the first of these from left to right before reaching the summit.





Here we are walking along the first line of fortifications.

We were impressed by the amount of work involved in constructing this and were not sure whether we felt more sorry for the Britons making it or anyone who tried to attack it!



The pattern of fortifications was not straightforward, but the Romans were expert at deciding where to position their heavy artillery. Perhaps a ballista positioned here would be able to do enough damage to take the fort!



I doubt if reall attackers would have had the energy or inclination to run and enjoy the scenery as we did!



A wonderful view of the defences to the south.



We had our picnic lunch in the park behind the church, where we found these impressive remains of the Roman town wall. Cirencester was an important fort on the Fosse Way during the conquest of Britain, and then a town developed in the area of the fort.






This Year 8 student is admiring a mosaic which shows the hunter Actaeon being torn apart by his own dogs after the goddess Diana turned him into a stag!





This capital was originally at the top of a huge pillar in the centre of Corinium, Roman Cirencester.
