My review of the film TROY

This is a brilliant film. If Homer had known he was writing for Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom I am sure he would have written his story-line in the same way!

There is evidence of very careful research, so lots of authentic details : figure-of-eight shields, jewellery, the ships and the epic panoramic views of the ancient cities. Sean Bean is excellent as Odysseus and the only major characters I found less than convincing were Eric Bana as Hector and Saffron Burrows as his wife Andromache. Achilles' fighting technique is amazing and wonderful to watch.

I had expected Hollywood to change the story, but I hadn't expected not to mind. I was rather surprised to see which heroes survived the war and which died, and there were no gods, but this made the action more believable for a modern audience. King Priam's death could have been more dramatic, and I was amused by the brief introduction to Aeneas (the Trojan hero who escaped and founded Rome). I don't think I am giving too much away if I say that Homer did not concentrate quite so much on presenting the romantic side of his characters!
